I had a conversation with a tree today.
Well, I should be more specific, it was a rather large tree stump. (Seriously, her diameter measured more than one of my long leg lengths!)
You might say she's fully dead, given I was staring at her (remarkable, star-shaped) innards, as you can see.
But as I put my hand upon the layered rings of her life and asked her what she want to share, she was quite talkative! She said:
“WE ARE ALL IN THE CONSTANT STATE OF RENEWING OURSELVES—FROM THE INSIDE OUT. AND THAT THEN RIPPLES OUT TO THE OUTER LAYERS. DO YOU SEE? MY VERY CENTER IS LIKE I WAS WHEN I JUST STARTED AS A LITTLE TREE. AND MY OUTER LAYERS REFLECT THE BARING-WITNESS TO THE YEARS ON THIS PLANET. DO YOU SEE?”
And then she went on:
“IT MATTERS WHAT YOU TAKE INTO YOUR INNER MOST CORE, FOR WHAT YOU EMANATE OUT FROM THERE BECOMES YOUR OUTER SKIN. YES? ”
And I got it. I felt her hum this into that knowing space within me. The one that continues to re-cognize that how we nourish ourselves with food, energy, friends, loved ones, nature — all of it — feeds the very center of our bones, and from which we grow anew in every moment. It matters. All of it. So take notice in your life:
HOW ARE YOU CONTRIBUTING TO YOUR OWN RENEWAL PROCESS?
Ah, Ms. Evergreen Tree! She certainly was far from dead. Maybe a bit inert these days, but wise beyond time, beyond movement, and beyond words.
