Creativity: Not Just For Artists

Creativity is not just for artists.

It’s for business people looking for a new way to close a sale;

it’s for engineers trying to solve a problem;

it’s for parents who want their children to see the world in more than one way.”

- Twyla Tharp, Creative Habit

I love this quote. It reminds me that creativity is our innate nature. It pours through us and swirls around us and is us. We are all creative beings.

Creativity is always creating something with and as us.

The trick is to understand this and just get on board, rather than believing that it’s something we have to leave behind when we “adult.”

We have such power to awesomely create - humans are amazing like that, our imaginations are incredibly potent - be it a beautiful dinner for our loved ones, the next “Hamilton,” a new way to clean up our polluted air with a simple solution, or many other things in-between. We get to bring into reality something that we capture in our imaginations.

It starts from our willingness to touch in with that quiet place inside. You know the one: it whispers to you - sometimes so quietly you can hardly hear it - saying, “Hey! This way!”

  • Pick up that pencil and doodle something.

  • Lay out a nice table.

  • Write a short story, a one sentence one at that.

  • Dance until you sweat, then do it again.

  • Solve a math problem.

  • Develop a joke until it makes your own sides split.

  • Make a beautiful flower arrangement and give it to someone.

  • Dress yourself like you are a work of art, even if it’s just for you.

  • Learn to knit.

  • Sit in a cafe and listen, watch, get involved.

Whatever it is for you that will light you up, tickle your insides. Just…get curious enough to know how creativity wants to be through you.

Take a small step towards it. Today. 💖
